The Present Simple tense is used to describe:
  • Habits and routines
  • General truths and facts
  • Scheduled events in the near future
  • Instructions or directions



Structure of Present Simple Tense

1. Affirmative Sentences:

  • Structure: Subject + Base form of the verb (add -s or -es for third-person singular)
  • Examples:
    • I play football.
    • She plays football.
    • They read books.

2. Negative Sentences:

  • Structure: Subject + do/does not + Base form of the verb
  • Examples:
    • I do not (don’t) play football.
    • She does not (doesn’t) play football.
    • They do not (don’t) read books.

3. Interrogative Sentences:

  • Structure: Do/Does + Subject + Base form of the verb?
  • Examples:
    • Do you play football?
    • Does she play football?
    • Do they read books?



Uses of Present Simple Tense

A. Habits and Routines:

  • Describe actions that happen regularly.
  • Examples:
    • I go to the gym every day.
    • She drinks coffee every morning.
    • They visit their grandparents every weekend.

B. General Truths and Facts:

  • Describe statements that are always true.
  • Examples:
    • The sun rises in the east.
    • Water boils at 100 degrees Celsius.
    • Birds fly.

C. Scheduled Events in the Near Future:

  • Describe events that are part of a fixed schedule.
  • Examples:
    • The train leaves at 6 PM.
    • The meeting starts at 9 AM.
    • The store opens at 10 AM.

D. Instructions or Directions:

  • Give instructions or directions.
  • Examples:
    • Open your books.
    • Turn left at the corner.
    • Take two tablets every day.



Time Expressions with Present Simple Tense

Common time expressions used with the Present Simple tense include:

  • Always
  • Usually
  • Often
  • Sometimes
  • Never
  • Every day/week/month/year
  • On Mondays/Tuesdays, etc.



Examples of Present Simple Tense

A. Affirmative:

  • He speaks English fluently.

B. Negative:

  • He doesn’t know the answer.

C. Interrogative:
